The focus of Parliament 2020: Visioning the Future Parliament is on how UK parliaments can improve processes, enhance communication and better engage with citizens. The participants in the research project comprised parliamentarians, parliamentary officials and members of the public from four countries (Australia, Canada, Chile and the UK). The barriers to engagement they identified include: lack of effective political literacy education; lack of accountability, transparency and access to information; the use of complicated and archaic language; lack of opportunities for interaction between elected representatives and the public; ineffective use of new technologies; and insufficient resources for parliamentary engagement.
